- The 4T65E is GM's front-drive 4-speed in the 2000 to 2011 Impala, the Venture and Montana from 1999, the Uplander, the Aztek and many Buicks; the 1996 to 1998 minivans have the 4T60E.
- Both have the same gear ratios, but the 4T60E controls pressure with a vacuum modulator and the 4T65E with a solenoid, and their overhaul kits differ.
- The most documented problem is harsh or long shifts with code P1811 or P0748, tied to the pressure control solenoid.
- With P1811, the transmission defaults to maximum line pressure, often with no check engine light; on 2007 GM minivans, GM fixed a false P1811 with a TCM reprogram.
- If it won't move, check the simple things first: on 2006 GM minivans, GM found the right driveshaft not seated.
If your automatic Impala, Venture, Uplander, Montana or Aztek bangs into gear, slips, shudders on the highway or sets code P1811, it most likely has a 4T65E or its predecessor, the 4T60E. This article covers which cars have them, how to tell them apart, their most documented problems according to GM's bulletins and rebuild specialists, their codes, the fluid they take and which TSS parts get replaced.
What is the 4T65E transmission?
It's a GM Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic for front-wheel drive. GM introduced the 4T60-E in 1991 and the 4T65-E in 1997, built in Warren, Michigan, and per GM's spec sheets both have the same gear ratios: 2.921 in 1st, 1.568 in 2nd, 1.000 in 3rd, 0.705 in 4th and 2.385 in reverse. The difference is how they control line pressure: the 4T60-E uses a vacuum modulator and the 4T65-E a pressure control solenoid. GM says more than 70% of the 4T65-E's components changed, including the torque converter, case and side cover, and that it uses two half-width drive chains instead of one full-width chain.
Which cars have the 4T65E?
| Model | Transmission |
|---|---|
| Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Trans Sport and Montana, Oldsmobile Silhouette 3.4 | 4T60-E from 1996 to 1998; 4T65-E from 1999 |
| Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Saturn Relay and Buick Terraza (2005 to 2009) | 4T65-E |
| Chevrolet Impala (2000 to 2011) | 4T65-E; the heavy-duty MN7 version with the 5.3 V8 |
| Pontiac Aztek (2001 to 2005) and Buick Rendezvous | 4T65-E, with a power take-off unit (PTU) on AWD versions |
| Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick Century, Regal, LeSabre and Park Avenue | 4T60-E in the mid-1990s; 4T65-E from 1997 to 2000, depending on the engine |
| Buick LaCrosse (2005 to 2009) and Lucerne V6 | 4T65-E |
Not this family: the Malibu's 4T40-E and 4T45-E, the Northstar Cadillacs' 4T80-E and the 6-speed 6T70 and 6T75 that replaced it in the larger cars from 2010. More by model in our guide What transmission does my Chevrolet have?.
How to tell a 4T60-E from a 4T65-E
- The 4T60-E has a vacuum modulator with its hose; the 4T65-E doesn't, because it controls pressure with a solenoid.
- The 4T65-E uses two half-width drive chains; the 4T60-E a single full-width chain.
- Codes: on GM's diagnostic sheets, only the 4T65-E has input speed sensor codes (P0716 and P0717) and pressure control solenoid codes (P0748).
- The service parts identification label: RPO codes M15, MN3, MN7 or M76 indicate a 4T65-E.
It matters because the overhaul kits differ: TSS has kits for the 4T60E and for the 4T65E. On a 1997 or 1998 minivan, confirm which one yours has before ordering.
Harsh or long shifts and code P1811
It's the 4T65-E's most documented problem. GM issued bulletins for slips, harsh upshifts or garage shifts, launch shudder, flares and erratic shifts with codes P1811 or P0748, and another on replacing the pressure control solenoid (PCS). According to TransGo, a maker of shift correction kits, P1811 and other codes are most often caused by a sticking armature in that solenoid, which can fail even in a clean, low-mileage transmission.
P1811 means, per GM, "Maximum Adapt and Long Shift": shifts take longer than normal and the computer has reached the limit of what it can compensate. The transmission then defaults to maximum line pressure, so every shift feels harsh, even out of Park, and per a GM bulletin the check engine light doesn't come on. Note: on 2007 Uplander, Montana, Relay and Terraza minivans, GM found a false P1811 that was fixed by reprogramming the transmission computer.
Another cause Sonnax documents is a worn actuator feed limit (AFL) valve bore in the channel plate: it lowers line pressure, can set P1811, makes the torque converter clutch slip (P0741) and can cause 2nd gear starts or falling out of 4th.
1-2 shift shudder
GM has a 4T65-E bulletin for a 1-2 shift shudder under light to moderate acceleration, and the repair is replacing the complete second clutch assembly.
Highway shudder: the torque converter clutch
GM issued bulletins for firm shifts, shudder or chuggle and no downshift on deceleration with code P0742; for harsh shifts or slips with codes P0741, P0742, P0757 or P0842, fixed by reconditioning the valve body; and for a missing drive sprocket support bearing with P0741 and P0742. On the 2005 to 2007 Impala, Monte Carlo and Grand Prix V8, converter shudder led to replacing the torque converter.
No drive or no reverse
Check the simple things before condemning the transmission. On 2006 Uplander and Montana minivans, GM found no-movement complaints and fluid leaks because the right driveshaft wasn't seated in the transmission, and the 2005 vans needed a shift cable adjustment. Other GM bulletins cover grinding or no movement when shifting into Drive or Reverse, and on the 2004 Grand Prix, slipping in Reverse or no Reverse when hot. Sun Transmissions explains why a car won't go in reverse.
No 3rd or 4th, or falls out of 4th
Per GM, code P0757 means no 3rd or 4th gear from a 2-3 shift solenoid performance fault. TransGo documents third clutch seal failures on the 4T60-E and 4T65-E, mostly when cold, and worn splines on the fourth clutch hub that leave the transmission without 4th. GM also has a bulletin on a burnt fourth clutch on 2000 and 2001 models.
Overheating
On 2006-and-later 4T65-Es, code P0218 means the fluid went above 140 °C (284 °F), per GM, and a bulletin for 2006 to 2008 models links slipping, no shifts and overheating to codes P0218 and P0894. Sun Transmissions explains the dangers of transmission overheating.
Common trouble codes
| Code | What it points to, per GM |
|---|---|
| P1811 | Maximum adapt and long shift; the transmission defaults to maximum line pressure |
| P0748 and P0961 | Pressure control solenoid: electrical circuit (P0748) or performance (P0961) |
| P0741 | Torque converter clutch stuck off: high slip with the clutch commanded on |
| P0742 | Torque converter clutch stuck on |
| P0751 and P0756 | 1-2 and 2-3 shift solenoid performance |
| P0757 | 2-3 shift solenoid: no 3rd or 4th gear |
| P0716 and P0717 | Input (turbine) speed sensor |
| P0711 to P0713 | Fluid temperature sensor |
| P0218 | Transmission fluid over temperature |
| P1870 | Transmission component slipping (4T60-E) |
Sun Transmissions explains code P0741.
What fluid does it take?
- GM specified DEXRON III for the 4T60-E and 4T65-E, about 7 liters (7.4 quarts) at a pan change.
- A 2005 GM bulletin says 2005 and earlier models that used DEXRON III may use DEXRON VI as a replacement, and 2006 and later models that use DEXRON VI must be serviced with DEXRON VI only.
- The same bulletin calls for a change every 50,000 miles in severe use.
- Check the level as your owner's manual or shop indicates.
How it's diagnosed and repaired
- Scan it with a tool that reads the transmission computer: P1811 can be stored with no check engine light.
- Check the fluid level and condition.
- For harsh shifts with P1811 or P0748, check the pressure control solenoid first, and on a 2007 Uplander or Montana ask about GM's reprogram.
- If it won't move, check that the driveshafts are seated and the shift cable is adjusted before opening the transmission.
- Identify whether it's a 4T60-E or a 4T65-E before ordering the overhaul kit.
How much does the repair cost? It depends on what failed: a solenoid, a reprogram or an unseated driveshaft isn't the same as a rebuild. Get a diagnosis before accepting a replacement transmission.
