- Tiptronic is the name Porsche registered in 1989 for the manual (+ and −) mode of an automatic transmission; VW and Audi use it too.
- It isn't a separate transmission: on VWs, "Tiptronic" is the conventional torque-converter automatic, such as the 09G, while "DSG" is the dual-clutch.
- Even in Tiptronic, according to VW, the transmission upshifts by itself just before the rev limit and won't downshift if the engine would over-rev.
- A CVT has no fixed gears and a DSG uses two clutches; no manufacturer says one is better than the others in general.
- When people talk about Tiptronic problems on Mexican VWs, it's usually the 09G: valve body, solenoids and relearning.
If your Volkswagen says "Tiptronic" on the spec sheet or the shifter, you may wonder whether it's a special transmission, whether it's good or bad, or how it differs from a CVT or a DSG. This article covers what Tiptronic is, where the name comes from, how to use it, which VWs have it, how it differs from other transmissions and its most common problems.
What is Tiptronic?
It's the name of a manual-shift mode on an automatic transmission: you move the shifter toward + or − (or use the paddles) and choose the gear, with no clutch pedal. Volkswagen's manuals define it as shifting gears manually on automatic transmissions.
The name belongs to Porsche. It introduced Tiptronic in 1989 and launched it on the 1990 model-year 911 Carrera 2 (964 generation), and Tiptronic has been a Porsche registered trademark in Germany since that year. Volkswagen and Audi use the name too, and Porsche now calls its torque-converter automatics Tiptronic S.
How it works and how to use it
According to VW's manual: from D, move the shifter to the right into the Tiptronic gate, and push it lightly toward + to upshift or − to downshift; with paddles, the right one upshifts and the left one downshifts. The computer still protects the engine:
- When accelerating, the transmission automatically shifts up just before the engine reaches its maximum allowed rpm.
- If you downshift manually, the shift happens only once the engine can no longer exceed its maximum rpm.
- If you stop using the paddles for a while and the shifter isn't in the Tiptronic gate, it returns to automatic mode by itself.
- Kick-down (flooring the throttle) works in Tiptronic too.
Not every maker programs its manual mode the same way. Toyota's M mode also shifts by itself if rpm gets too high or too low, but Ford warns that SelectShift won't upshift automatically even as the engine approaches the rpm limit. Which Volkswagens have Tiptronic?
On VW Mexico spec sheets, "Tiptronic" with the number of speeds is each model's conventional automatic, and "DSG" is the dual-clutch. Note: VW also calls the manual mode of its DSG cars Tiptronic. The sheets don't name the unit; the right-hand column is what each model usually has, according to the Transmisiones Veinte 07 identifier and specialists:
| Model (Mexico) | On the spec sheet | Usual transmission |
|---|---|---|
| Jetta IV 2.0 and New Beetle 2.0 | Automatic (4) | 01M 4-speed: not sold as Tiptronic |
| Bora (Jetta V) 2.5, Jetta 2.5, Beetle 2.5 and Passat 2.5 | Tiptronic (6) | 09G (Aisin TF-60SN) |
| Vento 1.6 | Tiptronic 6-speed | Probably the 09G |
| Jetta 1.4 TSI (2019 to 2021), Virtus, T-Cross and Nivus | Tiptronic (6) | Newer Aisin 6-speed |
| 2025 Jetta, Taos and Teramont (Atlas) | Tiptronic (8) | Aisin 8-speed |
| Bora Turbo, Golf, GTI, GLI, Beetle Turbo, Passat V6 and Tiguan from 2021 | DSG (6 or 7) | Dual-clutch, with a Tiptronic manual mode |

Tiptronic vs CVT vs DSG
- Tiptronic isn't a transmission but the manual mode of an automatic. On most Tiptronic VWs, that automatic is conventional: torque converter and fixed gears, 6 or 8 speeds. Porsche notes that the converter helps with smooth starts and towing.
- A DSG is a different transmission: according to VW, a dual clutch and two independent sub-transmissions let it shift very quickly without losing pulling power, and its clutches wear, just like in a manual.
- A CVT has no fixed gears: Nissan explains that it selects the ratio without steps, changing the width of two pulleys linked by a steel belt. Many simulate gears in their manual mode, such as the Corolla's 7-speed mode.
Which is best? No manufacturer or specialist says so in general: each type has its strengths and its maintenance. What does change are their failures and parts: the DSG and Ford's PowerShift are dual-clutch units, with typical clutch and mechatronic problems; Nissan CVT problems are in our CVT guide, and PowerShift problems in its guide.
Is Tiptronic good or bad? Its common problems
The + and − mode itself is rarely what breaks: when someone says "the Tiptronic is failing", they mean their VW's automatic, which on many cars is the 09G 6-speed. Its documented problems are these:
- Harsh shifts when cold: VW issued a bulletin for the 2007 and 2008 Jetta 2.5 and Passat with harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, mostly with fluid below 140 °F and no codes; the fix was software and an updated valve body.
- Valve body wear: according to Sonnax, it causes delayed engagement, neutral on coast-down, slipping in 4th, 5th and 6th, harsh shifts or flares.
- It isn't always wear: in another bulletin, VW found a broken wire at the solenoid connector causing erratic and harsh shifts.
- Relearning: after a valve body replacement or a rebuild, the adaptations must be cleared and relearned; otherwise it can keep shifting hard.
- Limp mode: according to VW, the 09G pulls away in 3rd and, if already in 4th, 5th or 6th, holds that gear until Neutral or engine off.

TSS parts for your VW's Tiptronic
The TSS catalog has parts for the 09G, the most common Tiptronic transmission in Mexican VWs:
- The 09G piston kit, one of TSS's best sellers, and Rojo and Dorado overhaul kits.
- Filters and pan, gasket and filter kits.
- N88 and N89 shift solenoids, linear solenoid sets and the harness with its temperature sensor.
- Steel plates and friction plate packs.
Before ordering, confirm your transmission by year, engine and VIN: VW's newer Tiptronic units aren't 09Gs. To buy online in the US, Sun Transmissions has a 09G parts collection.
TSS is an aftermarket brand with OEM-comparable quality and quality control on every product. You can buy it from our authorized distributors: in the United States from Sun Transmissions, and in Mexico the full TSS catalog at Transmisiones Veinte 07.
