TSS parts for the Aveo and Optra automatic transmissions: AW81-40LE overhaul kit, Optra range switch and friction plates
In short
  • The 2008 to 2018 automatic Aveo (1.6) has the Aisin AW81-40LE 4-speed, and the Optra the ZF 4HP16; the 2018 to 2023 Aveo uses another 4-speed and the 2024-on model a CVT.
  • An Aveo that won't shift into 4th when cold is normal: GM blocks 4th below 15 °C (59 °F). With the HOLD button on, it also starts in 3rd.
  • A flashing HOLD light means the transmission is in failsafe mode: it may stop shifting or shift harshly, and it needs a scan.
  • No reverse and a delayed Drive engagement point, per the technical literature, to the Aveo's timing solenoid; on the Optra, P0706 points to the range switch.
  • The 2008 to 2018 Aveo takes ESSO JWS 3309 or TOTAL FLUID III G per GM Mexico, not Dexron; the GM bulletins we cite are from the US.

The Chevrolet Aveo is one of the most common cars in Mexico, and its automatic transmission raises a lot of questions: it won't shift, the HOLD light flashes, it slips into neutral or it has no reverse. Here's which transmission your Aveo or Optra has, what's normal and what isn't, what each symptom means according to GM documents and the transmission trade literature, and what to check first.

Which automatic does your Aveo or Optra have?

  • 2008 to 2018 Aveo (1.6, built in San Luis Potosí): Aisin AW81-40LE 4-speed automatic. GM doesn't publish the code, but the gear ratios in the 2009 Mexican manual match the AW81-40LE's exactly. The Pontiac G3 is the same car with the same transmission.
  • 2018 to 2023 Aveo (1.5, built in China): another 4-speed automatic, with a manual mode and no dipstick. GM doesn't say which unit it is.
  • 2024-on Aveo: CTF25D CVT. Not covered in this guide.
  • Optra (about 2007 to 2010, 2.0): ZF 4HP16 4-speed automatic, developed with Daewoo. It's not an Aisin: it has a side cover instead of a bottom pan and uses no bands.

To confirm it, the 2008 to 2018 Aveo has a transmission dipstick and the 2018 to 2023 doesn't. The transaxle number label is on the upper front of the case, per the Mexican manual. We cover every Chevrolet model in what transmission does my Chevrolet have?.

The HOLD light flashes or it won't shift

On the Aveo and the Optra, a flashing HOLD indicator means the computer detected a fault. The Mexican Aveo manual says to have it checked right away, and that in failsafe mode "automatic shifting may be cancelled or shifts may be much harsher than normal". That's why the symptoms overlap: it stays in one gear, won't shift or bangs. The first step is to scan the codes: without them, replacing parts is guesswork.

If the HOLD light is steady, not flashing, the HOLD button is simply on: in D, the Aveo starts in 3rd and stays there, which feels like it won't accelerate. For other causes, see transmission not shifting.

Why won't my automatic Aveo shift into 4th?

  • When cold, it's normal: GM explains in the US that on the Aveo, Pontiac G3 and Wave, 4th gear is blocked below 15 °C (59 °F) of fluid temperature for emissions and heater performance, and asks not to try to repair it.
  • Check that the HOLD button isn't on, because with it the transmission won't go past 3rd.
  • If it still won't take 4th when warm, the AW81-40LE technical literature says 4th uses the direct clutch and the overdrive brake and is commanded by shift solenoid 2: scan it before opening the transmission.

Slow to engage Drive or no reverse

The AW81-40LE has a timing solenoid that controls the forward clutch on the 3-4 and 4-3 shifts. According to the transmission trade literature (ATSG), if that solenoid fails open the car has no reverse, engages Drive late and flares on the 4-3 downshift; if it fails closed, the 3-4 and 4-3 shifts are harsh. The same solenoid deliberately blocks reverse if you select it while rolling forward above about 5 mph, and that's normal.

If the shifter won't come out of P, GM documented shift interlock solenoid failures in the US and, on the 2009 Aveo, open fuses. More causes at veinte07 (in Spanish): why reverse won't engage.

Jerks, bangs or hesitates when accelerating

  • Harsh shifts are a failsafe-mode symptom: if the HOLD light flashes, scan it.
  • A timing solenoid stuck closed gives harsh 3-4 and 4-3 shifts, per the trade literature.
  • An engine fault feels similar: on the 2004 to 2007 US Aveo, GM documented misfires with codes P0300, P0700 and P1781 that are easily mistaken for transmission jerks.
  • A brief hesitation when you accelerate again after braking is normal: GM attributes it to engine torque management on almost all its vehicles.

We cover this in more detail in transmission slipping or shifting hard.

Slips into neutral or won't move

Check the fluid level first. The Mexican Aveo manual warns that "too much or too little fluid can cause problems" and that needing more than 1.5 liters to fill it can be a sign of a leak. If the level is fine, shops check the forward clutch, which works in 1st through 3rd, the pump pressure and the range switch or shift cable. GM has no bulletin on this symptom for the Aveo.

It starts but won't crank

It's almost always the battery or the starter. On the transmission side, the only thing that prevents cranking is the park/neutral (range) switch, which only allows cranking in P or N. If the Aveo cranks in N but not in P, or the other way around, check that switch (the Aveo's is GM number 93741830) and its adjustment. veinte07 explains the symptoms of a bad neutral safety switch (in Spanish).

Aveo and Optra trouble codes

P0700The transmission computer requested the check engine light. Check: read the other stored codes; on the Aveo it can come with engine faults (P0300, P1781).
P0705 and P0706Range sensor or switch. Check: switch and cable adjustment, connector and switch; it's the Optra's most searched code.
P0711 to P0713Fluid temperature sensor. Check: valve body harness and sensor.
P0715 and P0717Input speed sensor (Optra). Check: sensor and connector.
P0720 and P0722Output speed sensor. Check: sensor and connector; on the Optra it sits under the valve body.
P0730 to P0734Incorrect gear ratio: the transmission slips. Check: fluid level and condition, pressure and clutches.
P0740 to P0743Torque converter clutch (TCC); P0742 means it stays applied, and the engine stalls or shudders when stopping. Check: fluid, connector and TCC solenoid before the converter.
P0750 to P0758Shift solenoids 1 and 2. Check: harness, connector and solenoids.
P0218Transmission overheating (2018 to 2023 Aveo). Check: stop and idle to let it cool; if it repeats, check the level and cooling.

veinte07 explains codes P0742 and P0743 and P0706 in detail (in Spanish).

Optra problems (ZF 4HP16)

  • P0706 and a flashing HOLD light: Optra owners link it to the range switch, sometimes together with P0703 from the brake switch.
  • Harsh 4-3 downshift: GM documented it on the 2005 Canadian Optra, and Suzuki, with code P1884, on the Forenza and Reno, which use the same transmission.
  • Locks up when shifting into 4th: 4th only uses the C brake, and shops report damage to its piston, which is why the Optra's "4th gear piston" is so searched.
  • Speed sensors: the 4HP16 has an input sensor on the valve body and an output sensor under it.

2018 to 2023 Aveo: transmission light and "transmission hot"

Per its Mexican manual, the transmission light comes on when there's a transmission problem, but also when you make an incorrect shift or when the transmission enters its overheat protection mode, and in those cases it doesn't indicate a fault. With the "transmission hot" message, GM says to stop and let the engine idle so the fluid cools: the message clears on its own.

What fluid does the Aveo automatic take?

The 2008 to 2018 Aveo takes ESSO JWS 3309 or TOTAL FLUID III G, per its Mexican manuals; the Dexron VI they mention is for the power steering. The level is checked with the engine running, in P, with the fluid hot, between 70 and 80 °C (158 and 176 °F), and it should sit between MIN and MAX of the dipstick's hot range. The 2018 to 2023 Aveo takes AW-1 (GM number 19256039) and has no dipstick: the dealer checks the level. For the Optra, use the fluid in its manual. If you read online that the Aveo takes Dexron, that's not what GM Mexico says.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most about this topic.

  • What transmission does the Chevrolet Aveo have?

The 2008 to 2018 Aveo (1.6) has an Aisin AW81-40LE 4-speed automatic; the 2018 to 2023 Aveo (1.5) uses another 4-speed automatic with no dipstick, and the 2024-on model a CVT.

  • Why won't my automatic Aveo shift into 4th?

When cold it's normal: GM blocks 4th below 15 °C (59 °F) of fluid temperature. It also happens with the HOLD button on, because the transmission stays in 3rd. If it's the same when warm, it needs a scan.

  • Why is the HOLD light flashing on my Aveo or Optra?

Because the computer detected a fault and put the transmission in failsafe mode: it may stop shifting or shift harshly. GM says to have it checked right away; the first step is reading the codes.

  • What does code P0742 mean on the Aveo?

That the torque converter clutch stays applied. The typical symptom is the engine shuddering or stalling when stopping. Check the fluid, connector and TCC solenoid before the converter.

  • What does code P0706 mean on the Optra?

That the range sensor or switch signal isn't plausible. Check the switch and shift cable adjustment, the connector and the switch.

  • What fluid does the Aveo automatic take?

The 2008 to 2018 Aveo takes ESSO JWS 3309 or TOTAL FLUID III G, per GM Mexico, and the 2018 to 2023 model AW-1. It's not Dexron.
