TSS parts for Nissan transmissions: Dorado gasket kit for the JF015E CVT, JF011E CVT step motor and CVT pan
In short
  • Many automatic Nissans have a CVT (Nissan calls it Xtronic), but not all: in Mexico, the 2012 to 2019 Versa, the March and the Tiida automatics are 4-speeds.
  • Each CVT has its own code, and most of its parts, like filters and gasket kits, are different: confirm yours before you order.
  • To tell which one you have, check the trim name (A/T or CVT) and the fluid in the owner's manual: NS-2 or NS-3 means a CVT; Matic means a geared automatic.
  • Nissan CVTs take NS-2 or NS-3 depending on the model: never add ATF, and don't mix the two.

If you have an automatic Nissan and need transmission parts, you first have to know which transmission it has, because Nissan used several, sometimes in the same model depending on the year or engine. In this article we'll cover which transmission each automatic Nissan sold in Mexico has, which ones are CVTs and which are geared automatics, how to confirm yours and which fluid it takes. Many US models share the same transmissions, but not all, and we flag the differences we know of.

What transmissions does Nissan use?

Almost all of Nissan's automatic transmissions are built by Jatco, a Nissan group company. They come in two types:

  • CVT, or continuously variable transmission: instead of fixed gears, it has two pulleys linked by a steel belt that change diameter. Nissan calls it Xtronic. There are several families, and each one has its own parts.
  • Geared automatic: the classic kind, with planetary gear sets. Nissan has used 4, 5, 7 and 9-speed units.

Each transmission has a Nissan code, like RE0F11A, and the CVTs also have a Jatco code, like JF015E: they're two names for the same unit, and parts are sold under either one. This guide gives both whenever Nissan or industry documents confirm them. The years are model years for the Mexican versions, based on Nissan Mexico's spec sheets, Nissan's service manuals and technical bulletins, and the transmission identifier on the Transmisiones Veinte 07 home page (in Spanish).

What transmission does the Nissan Versa have?

It depends on the year, and this is where the US and Mexico differ:

  • 2012 to 2019 Versa (N17): in Mexico, every automatic has a 4-speed, not a CVT, according to Nissan Mexico's spec sheets for those years, in every automatic trim. It's from the RE4F03 family, the same as the March. In the US, most of these Versa sedans have a CVT, the JF015E (RE0F11A), and the base S offered a 4-speed from 2013.
  • 2020 and later Versa (N18): Xtronic CVT, which Nissan codes RE0F11B.

So if your 2012 to 2019 Versa was sold in Mexico as an automatic, look for 4-speed automatic parts, not CVT parts. If it's a US car, check whether it's the CVT or the 4-speed.

What transmission does the Nissan March have?

The March (K13) was sold in Mexico from 2012 to 2025 with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic from the same RE4F03 family as the 2012 to 2019 Versa; the Transmisiones Veinte 07 identifier lists it as the RE4F03C. In Mexico it never had a CVT, and the 2026 March is manual only. Its common problems, and those of the Versa and Sentra 4-speed, are in our Nissan RE4F03 guide.

What transmission does the Nissan Sentra have?

It changed with every generation:

  • 2001 to 2006 (B15): 4-speed automatic. With the 1.8 engine it's the RE4F03B; with the 2.5 it's the RE4F04B. The SE-R was manual only in Mexico.
  • 2007 to 2012 (B16): JF011E (RE0F10A) CVT. A 2009 automatic Sentra, for example, has this CVT.
  • 2013 to 2019 (B17): JF015E (RE0F11A) CVT, with the 1.8 engine.
  • 2020 to 2025 (B18): JF016E (RE0F10D) CVT, with the 2.0 engine.
  • 2026 and later: a new-generation CVT; we haven't confirmed its code yet.

What transmission does the Nissan Kicks have?

  • 2017 to 2025 (P15, including the gasoline Kicks Play in Mexico): Xtronic CVT, which Nissan codes RE0F11B, the same unit as the 2020-and-later Versa.
  • 2025 and later (P16, 2.0 engine): a new-generation CVT; we haven't confirmed its code yet.
  • e-POWER versions have no transmission in the usual sense: the gasoline engine only generates electricity, and the electric motor drives the wheels.

Careful with parts: the RE0F11B is a different variant from the JF015E (RE0F11A) in the 2013 to 2019 Sentra, with different ratios, so don't assume they share parts. Confirm before you order.

What transmission does the Nissan X-Trail have?

  • 2003 to 2007 (T30): RE4F04B 4-speed automatic, as the Transmisiones Veinte 07 identifier lists it; it's the same unit as the 2.5 Altima of those years, which has the same engine.
  • 2008 to 2014 (T31): JF011E (RE0F10A) CVT.
  • 2015 to 2022 (T32): JF016E (RE0F10D) CVT. In the US, this generation was sold as the 2014 to 2020 Rogue, with the same RE0F10D.
  • 2023 and later (T33): CVT with the 2.5 engine. The X-Trail e-POWER has no transmission in the usual sense.

What transmission does the Nissan Altima have?

  • 2002 to 2006 (L31): RE4F04B 4-speed automatic, with the 2.5 and 3.5 engines. In the US, the 2005 and 2006 3.5 used a 5-speed (RE5F22A); we haven't confirmed whether Mexico got it.
  • 2007 to 2012 (L32): JF011E (RE0F10A) CVT with the 2.5, and JF010E (RE0F09B) CVT with the 3.5.
  • 2013 to 2018 (L33): JF016E (RE0F10D) CVT with the 2.5. With the 3.5, a JF017E (RE0F10E) CVT for 2013 and 2014, and an RE0F10H CVT for 2015 to 2018.
  • 2019 and later (L34): JF016E (RE0F10D) CVT with the 2.5. We haven't confirmed the code of the 2.0 VC-Turbo's CVT.

Tiida, Note, Tsuru and Platina

  • Tiida (2007 to 2018 in Mexico): the automatic versions, with the 1.8 engine, have a 4-speed automatic from the RE4F03 family, most likely the RE4F03B. The 1.6 Tiida was manual only, and we found no CVT Tiida in Mexico.
  • Note (2014 to 2019): JF015E (RE0F11A) CVT, according to Nissan's bulletins for the 2014 to 2017 Note and US Versa Note. For the last years, confirm the code before you order.
  • Tsuru (Mexico's long-running version of the 1990s Sentra): the automatic versions, still listed by Nissan Mexico in 2008, have a 4-speed automatic from the RL4F03A / RE4F03 family. The last Tsurus were manual only.
  • Platina (2002 to 2010): since it uses a Renault engine and platform, its 4-speed automatic is a Renault unit too: the DP0, also called AL4, as the Transmisiones Veinte 07 identifier lists it. We cover its problems in the Renault and Peugeot DP0 / AL4.

Pathfinder, Murano, Rogue and Juke

  • Pathfinder: 2005 to 2012, RE5R05A 5-speed automatic with the 4.0 V6; 2013 to 2020, JF017E (RE0F10E) CVT in Mexican versions (US models from 2015 on can have the RE0F10J); and from 2023, a ZF 9HP 9-speed automatic.
  • Murano: 2003 to 2007, JF010E (RE0F09A) CVT; 2009 to 2014, JF010E (RE0F09B) CVT; and 2019 to 2024, an RE0F10E or RE0F10J CVT.
  • Rogue (2008 to 2014): JF011E (RE0F10A) CVT.
  • Juke (2012 to 2017, 1.6 turbo): RE0F10B CVT, from the JF011E family, in the early years, and JF016E (RE0F10D) CVT in the later ones, at least 2015 to 2017.

Watch out with the 2003 and 2004 Murano: Nissan Mexico's spec sheets for those years say "4-speed automatic", but Nissan's service manuals say CVT. If you have one, check the transmission's model number before you order parts.

Frontier and NP300

  • 2000 to 2004 Frontier (D22, 2.4 and 3.3 V6): 4-speed automatic, most likely the RE4R01A. The Mexican Pick-up, Estacas and NP300 work trucks of that generation were manual only.
  • 2011 to 2015 Frontier PRO-4X (D40, 4.0 V6): RE5R05A 5-speed automatic.
  • NP300 Frontier and Frontier from 2017 (D23, sold in Mexico): 7-speed automatic, first only with the diesel engine and later with the gasoline engine too. We haven't confirmed its code (RE7R01A or RE7R01B). Today's NP300 work truck is manual only.
  • Frontier V6 PRO-4X from 2022 (3.8 V6): 9-speed automatic, which Nissan calls the GE9R01A and Jatco the JR913E.

How do you tell which transmission your Nissan has?

If you're not sure which one yours has, these are the most reliable ways to confirm it:

  • The transmission identifier on the Transmisiones Veinte 07 home page (in Spanish): look up your make, model and year. If it shows several transmissions, the model used more than one depending on the market, year or engine; confirm yours with the other ways on this list.
  • The trim name: Nissan Mexico puts the transmission type in each trim's name, like "Versa Sense A/T" or "Note Advance CVT". Check how the trim appears on your paperwork.
  • The spec sheet for your model and year: it says "Xtronic CVT" or "4-speed automatic", for example.
  • The fluid in the owner's manual: NS-2 or NS-3 means a CVT; Matic (S, D, J, K or P) means a geared automatic.
  • The model number marked on the transmission itself: it's the most reliable reference for ordering parts, and your mechanic can read it.
  • Your VIN: a Nissan dealer can confirm the exact transmission with it.

What fluid does your Nissan's transmission take?

Each family calls for a different fluid. According to Nissan's manuals:

JF010E (RE0F09A and RE0F09B) and JF011E (RE0F10A and RE0F10B) CVTsNS-2
JF015E (RE0F11A), RE0F11B and JF016E (RE0F10D) CVTsNS-3 (the 2012 US Versa's RE0F11A used NS-2)
JF017E (RE0F10E), RE0F10H and RE0F10J CVTsNS-2 or NS-3 depending on the year and model: check your manual
4-speed automatics (RE4F03 and RE4F04)Matic D or Matic S depending on the year: early-2000s manuals call for Matic D and newer ones for Matic S
RE5R05A 5-speed automaticMatic J; newer manuals call for Matic S
9-speed automatic (V6 Frontier)Matic P
Platina (Renault DP0 or AL4)The DP0 fluid Renault specifies: Elf's catalog approves Renaultmatic D3 Syn

These come from Nissan's manuals and the Transmisiones Veinte 07 identifier, so always confirm with your vehicle's manual. And two rules for CVTs: never add conventional ATF, because a CVT needs a fluid with just the right friction to keep its steel belt from slipping on the pulleys, and don't mix NS-2 with NS-3. The level isn't checked like on a regular automatic either: many CVTs have no dipstick.

How good is Nissan's CVT?

It's one of the questions owners ask most, and there's no single answer: it depends on the model, how the car is used and, above all, maintenance. Nissan calls for a specific fluid in its CVTs, NS-2 or NS-3, and warns against using ATF or mixing the two. If your CVT whines, jerks or loses power, check the fluid level and condition first. Sun Transmissions has a guide to the top CVT transmission symptoms, and another on Nissan Altima transmission problems.
