What transmission does my Toyota have? By model

TSS editorial team · · 11 min read

TSS parts for Toyota transmissions: U660E and U760E solenoid kit, K313 CVT filter and Avanza friction plates
In short
  • Toyota Mexico gives the transmission type (4-, 5-, 6- or 8-speed automatic, or CVT), not the code; we inferred the names from Toyota's US documents.
  • The Corolla was a 4-speed automatic until 2013 and a CVT from 2018; the Camry went from 4 to 5, 6 and 8 speeds, and the RAV4 from 4 to 6 and 8.
  • The automatic Avanza is a rear-drive 4-speed through 2021; from 2022 it's a front-drive CVT.
  • In Mexico, the automatic Hilux is the 2.8 diesel 6-speed: the 2.7 gas was manual only. And the automatic Tacoma was a V6.
  • Toyota uses three fluid families (T-IV, WS and CVT Fluid FE) that don't mix; the Toyota bulletins and programs we cite are US documents.

If you have an automatic Toyota and need transmission parts, first you need to know which unit it has: the same model can have different transmissions by year and engine, and sometimes the Mexican version differs from the US one. We explain which transmission each automatic Toyota sold in Mexico has, how to confirm yours, which problems Toyota documented and what fluid it takes.

Which transmissions does Toyota use?

Toyota names its automatics with a letter and numbers. Units starting with U are front-drive transaxles, like the U241E, U660E or U760E. Units starting with A are rear-drive transmissions, like the Tacoma's A750 or the Tundra's AB60, with one exception: the Corolla's A245E, which is front-drive. And units starting with K are CVTs, like the Corolla's K313. Many are built by Aisin, part of the Toyota group, which is why parts suppliers also list them under Aisin names, such as AW95-50LS for the U250E or TB-50LS for the A750.

Toyota Mexico doesn't publish the code: its spec sheets say "4-speed automatic", "6-speed automatic with ECT-i" or "CVT". We inferred each unit's name from Toyota's US documents for the same engine, years and number of speeds. And Mexico isn't the US: there, the Hilux 2.7 gas was manual only, the automatic Tacoma was a V6 and the automatic Avanza is rear-drive through 2021.

What transmission does the Toyota Corolla have?

  • 2003 to 2008 Corolla (1.8): 4-speed automatic, probably the A245E. The 2003 to 2008 Matrix has the same unit.
  • 2009 to 2013 Corolla (1.8): 4-speed automatic, probably the U341E. The 2009 to 2011 Corolla XRS 2.4 has the 5-speed U250E.
  • 2014 to 2017 Corolla: we found no Mexican spec sheets. In the US, Toyota put the K313 CVT in the Corolla 1.8 from 2014.
  • 2018 and 2019 Corolla (1.8): CVT with "seven simulated speeds", from the K313 family per Toyota's US documents.
  • 2020 to 2022 Corolla: CVT with the 1.8 and the 2.0 ("10 simulated gears"); the 2.0's would be the K120. From 2023, 2.0 CVT only, with the hybrid separate.

Parts buyers also search for the K111 and K114: we found no Toyota sold in Mexico with the K111, and the K114 only appears in parts catalogs for the C-HR 2.0. TSS doesn't sell parts for them or for the K120.

What transmission does the Toyota Camry have?

  • 2002 and 2003 Camry: 4-speed automatic, the U241E with the 2.4 and the U140E with the 3.0 V6.
  • 2004 Camry: the 2.4 keeps the 4-speed U241E and the 3.0 V6 gets the 5-speed U151E.
  • 2005 and 2006 Camry: both versions are 5-speeds, the U250E with the 2.4 and the U151E with the V6.
  • 2007 to 2009 Camry: 5-speed U250E with the 2.4 and 6-speed U660E with the 3.5 V6.
  • 2010 and 2011 Camry: we found no spec sheet; in the US, the 2.5 uses the U760E.
  • 2012 to 2017 Camry: 6-speed automatic, the U760E with the 2.5 and the U660E with the 3.5 V6.
  • 2018 to 2024 Camry: 8-speed automatic, the UA80E, with the 2.5 and the 3.5 V6. From 2025 it's sold as a hybrid only.

If you're looking for Camry or RAV4 solenoids, our transmission solenoid guide explains how they're tested, and the TSS kits are listed below.

What transmission does the Toyota RAV4 have?

  • 2004 to 2008 RAV4 (2.4): 4-speed automatic, the U241E, or the U140F with all-wheel drive.
  • 2009 to 2012 RAV4: with the 2.5, a front-drive 4-speed automatic (U241E); with the 3.5 V6, the 5-speed U151E.
  • 2013 to 2018 RAV4 (2.5): 6-speed automatic, the U760E (U760F with all-wheel drive).
  • 2019-and-later RAV4: 8-speed automatic (UA80) with the 2.5, plus the hybrid version.

What transmission does the Toyota Avanza have?

  • 2007 to 2021 Avanza (1.5): rear-drive 4-speed automatic, per Toyota Mexico. Parts suppliers sell it as the A4LB1 or U540E, but Toyota doesn't publish that name.
  • 2022-and-later Avanza: a new generation, front-drive with a CVT. TSS doesn't sell parts for that transmission.

The Mexican Avanza owner's manual calls for Toyota ATF Type T-IV or DEXRON III (4.9 liters) and, if the automatic transmission warning light comes on, for the dealer to inspect the vehicle immediately. We found no Toyota bulletins on its transmission.

What transmission does the Toyota Hilux have?

  • Hilux 2.7 gas: 5-speed manual only, in every Toyota Mexico document from 2006 to 2026.
  • Hilux 2.8 diesel: 6-speed automatic, per the 2017 owner's manual and the 2022 to 2026 spec sheets; probably from the AC60 family, like the Tacoma.

We couldn't confirm the first year of the automatic Hilux diesel in Mexico. If you're offered A340 or A750 parts "for the Hilux", they're for Hilux models from other markets.

What transmission does the Toyota Tacoma have?

  • 2005 to 2015 Tacoma: in Mexico it was sold only with the 4.0 V6 and a 5-speed automatic, the A750E or A750F (2WD or 4WD). The automatic Tacoma 2.7, with the A340, is a US model.
  • 2016 to 2023 Tacoma (3.5 V6): 6-speed automatic, the AC60E or AC60F.
  • 2025 Tacoma (2.4 turbo): 8-speed automatic; TSS doesn't sell parts for it.

Yaris, Yaris R and Matrix

  • 2006 to 2013 Yaris (1.5): 4-speed automatic, probably the U340E.
  • 2014 to 2017 Yaris: 4-speed automatic; we couldn't confirm the code.
  • 2016 to 2019 Yaris R: built by Mazda, with its 6-speed automatic; parts for Toyota's U-series units don't fit.
  • 2019 to 2024 Yaris hatchback and sedan: CVT; we couldn't confirm the code.
  • 2003 to 2008 Matrix (1.8): 4-speed automatic, like the Corolla of those years.

Highlander, Sienna and Solara

  • Highlander (3.5 V6): 5-speed from 2008 to 2013 (U151E or U151F), 6-speed from 2014 to 2016 (U660E or U660F) and 8-speed from 2017 to 2022 (UA80).
  • Sienna: 5-speed from 2004 to 2010 (U151E), 6-speed from 2011 to 2016 (U660E) and 8-speed from 2017 to 2020 (UA80); from 2021 it's hybrid only.
  • 2005 and 2006 Solara (3.3 V6): 5-speed automatic (U151E).

Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser and 4Runner

  • With the 4.0 V6 or 4.7 V8: 5-speed automatic, the A750E or A750F. That covers the 2007 Tundra, 2008 Sequoia, 2004 to 2007 Land Cruiser, 2008 to 2014 FJ Cruiser and 2003 to 2007 4Runner.
  • With the 5.7 V8 (2010 to 2021 Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser): 6-speed automatic, the AB60E or AB60F.
  • The 2023-and-later Sequoia uses a 10-speed automatic; TSS doesn't sell parts for it.

C-HR, Corolla Cross, Raize and hybrids

  • 2018 and 2019 C-HR (2.0): CVT; parts catalogs call it the K114.
  • 2022-and-later Corolla Cross (2.0): CVT with 10 simulated speeds, probably the K120.
  • 2022-and-later Raize (1.0 turbo): CVT.
  • Hybrids (Prius and the hybrid Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Sienna and Highlander): they use the transmission of Toyota's hybrid system, which doesn't take conventional automatic transmission parts.

TSS doesn't sell parts for any of these transmissions.

Common problems Toyota documented

These are the transmission problems Toyota documented in US bulletins and programs for models also sold in Mexico:

Shudder between 25 and 50 mph under light throttle: 2012 to 2014 Camry and 2013 to 2015 RAV4 (U760E)Torque converter shudder. Toyota first updated the engine software and replaced the converter, with extra magnets, only if it confirmed the condition; it also extended coverage (programs ZE5 and ZH1).
Whine once warm, a check engine light with code P2757 or limited speed: 2014 to 2019 Corolla CVT (K313)The whine came from a valve body plate, and with P2757 Toyota replaces the valve body. A campaign (JSD) reprogrammed 2014 to 2017 CVTs: the car could be limited to about 37 mph with code P2820.
Park-to-reverse shock at startup or hesitation when accelerating again: 2018-and-later Camry and 2019 RAV4 (UA80)Engine software updates. Toyota also documented side cover leaks, an internal nut that could loosen in 2017 and 2018 Highlander and Sienna models (program ZJC) and a whine in the 2021 Camry fixed by replacing the transmission.
Slipping or a check engine light with codes such as P2714 or P0751: Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser 5.7 (AB60)New software and, in some cases, a replacement transmission. Toyota asks for the fluid level to be checked before ordering parts or reprogramming, because an incorrect level also sets those codes.
Delayed Drive or Reverse, surging at 40 to 50 mph or hesitation: 2016 to 2020 Tacoma V6 (AC60)Several engine software updates.
Delayed Reverse or Drive with code P0705: 2005 to 2009 Tacoma (A750)It's the range sensor circuit, which reads the shift lever position, not the transmission internals.
Harsh shift and a check engine light with code P2716: 2005 Corolla and 2007 CamryBulletins for those cases; on the Camry, a transmission software update.
Rear clunk when pulling away or braking, or a whine at 50 to 60 mph: Tacoma and FJ CruiserNot the transmission: Toyota fixed it at the driveshaft or the rear differential.
Transmission light on: AvanzaWe found no bulletins; the Mexican manual asks for the dealer to inspect it immediately.

We found no PROFECO (Mexico's consumer agency) alerts for Toyota transmission faults. To check for an open campaign, look up your VIN with Toyota.

How to tell which transmission your Toyota has

If you're not sure which one yours has, these are the most reliable ways to confirm it:

  • The Transmisiones Veinte 07 transmission finder: search for your make, model and year. If it shows several transmissions, confirm yours with the other methods on this list.
  • Your model and year's spec sheet: the engine and number of speeds are almost always enough.
  • The fluid in the owner's manual: T-IV, WS or CVT Fluid FE (listed below).
  • The transmission serial number: Toyota stamps it in a different place for each family; on the U760E, for example, on the case flange above the differential.
  • Your VIN: a Toyota dealer can use it to confirm the exact transmission.

On 4-speed automatics, a steady "O/D OFF" light only means you turned overdrive off with the button on the shifter, per the US 2007 Corolla manual; it's not a fault.

What fluid does your Toyota's transmission take?

Toyota uses three fluid families that don't mix:

2007 to 2021 Avanza (4-speed automatic)Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV or DEXRON III, per its manual
Older automatics, such as the Corolla's through 2008Usually T-IV: confirm in the manual
Most recent automatics, including the Hilux 2.8 automatic and the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land CruiserToyota Genuine ATF WS
The 2018 and 2019 Corolla CVT and the C-HRToyota Genuine CVT Fluid FE
2016 to 2019 Yaris R (Mazda transmission)The ATF its manual specifies

Toyota started using WS fluid in the mid-2000s and the exact year varies by model, so confirm it in your manual. In the US, Toyota warns that WS isn't compatible with T-IV or Dexron, and on WS units the level is a shop job: it's set hot through the overflow plug, and on the U660E and U760E, between 85 and 90 °C (185 and 194 °F) with a scan tool. Mexican owner's manuals warn that another fluid can cause poor shift quality, shudder and transmission damage.
