- The internal harness connects the case connector to the solenoids and the fluid temperature (TFT) sensor.
- When it fails: codes from several solenoids at once, erratic shifts or limp mode.
- Possible codes: P0750, P0755, P0760, P0743, P0745, P0712 and P0713.
- Check the case connector first: oil or corrosion are warning signs.
- Two versions: 1995 to 2003, and 2004 on with the case connector.
If your AX4N-equipped Taurus, Sable or Windstar started setting solenoid codes or shifting strangely, the problem isn't always the solenoids: often it's the wiring that feeds them. In this article we'll explain what the AX4N / 4F50N internal harness is, the symptoms when it fails, how to test it and how to choose the right one.
What is the AX4N internal wiring harness?
It's the wiring inside the transmission. It links the case connector, where the vehicle harness plugs in, to the five solenoids: the three shift solenoids, the pressure control solenoid (EPC) and the torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC). It also carries the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor. The computer's commands travel through it, and so does the fluid temperature the computer uses to decide shifts.
The AX4N is a Ford four-speed front-wheel-drive automatic. It was used in versions of the Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable and Ford Windstar, and also in the Lincoln Continental, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey. It is also known as the 4F50N: the same transmission. Note: some Taurus, Sable and Windstar years have the AX4S or the AXODE, which are different transmissions, so confirm which one your vehicle has before ordering parts.
Symptoms of a bad internal harness
A failing internal harness usually shows symptoms like these:
- Codes from several solenoids at the same time, even though the solenoids are fine.
- Intermittent faults: the problem comes and goes, especially over bumps or when the transmission is hot.
- Erratic, late or missing shifts.
- Limp mode: the transmission stays in one gear and the car loses power.
- Oil in the case connector or on the outside harness.
When communication drops with all or most solenoids at once, the fault is most likely in what they share: the harness or the connector, not each solenoid separately.
Trouble codes related to the internal harness
These OBD-II codes can appear when the internal harness is damaged, because they point to faults in circuits that run through it:
- P0750, P0755 and P0760: shift solenoid A, B and C circuit malfunction.
- P0743: torque converter clutch (TCC) circuit electrical fault.
- P0745 and P0748: pressure control solenoid (EPC) circuit fault.
- P0712 and P0713: low or high signal from the fluid temperature (TFT) sensor, which sits on the same harness.
The general transmission code, P0700, often shows up too.
Why does the internal harness fail?
- Heat: over the years, fluid temperature hardens and cracks the wire insulation.
- Loose or corroded terminals at the solenoid or case connectors.
- Fluid leaking through the case connector, which can also wick up the outside harness.
- Wires rubbing on internal parts or damaged during an earlier repair.
How do you test the internal harness?
Start by reading the codes with an OBD-II scanner, and check the transmission fluid level and condition.
Then unplug the case connector and inspect it: oil, green terminals or bent pins are warning signs. With a multimeter you can measure each solenoid circuit from the connector and compare with the service manual values. If a reading changes when you move the harness, or several circuits fail at once, the harness is the main suspect.
Replacing it means removing the valve body cover on the driver's side, where the solenoids sit. On many vehicles you need to lower the crossmember or subframe slightly for clearance. Replace the cover gasket and check the solenoids while you're there.
How do you choose the right internal harness?
The AX4N internal harness comes in two versions by year: one for 1995 to 2003 models and one for 2004 on, which includes the case connector. Confirm your vehicle's year and compare the connector before ordering.
TSS makes both: the TSS internal harness for 1995 to 2003 and the internal harness with case connector for 2004 on, both at Transmisiones Veinte 07.
TSS parts for the AX4N / 4F50N
The AX4N / 4F50N transmission page lists the TSS parts for this transmission: solenoids, gasket kits, filters, bands and more. If you're opening the transmission to replace the harness, check the gasket kits too.
TSS is an aftermarket brand with OEM-comparable quality and quality control on every product. You can buy it from our authorized distributors: in the United States from Sun Transmissions, and in Mexico the full TSS catalog at Transmisiones Veinte 07.
