- P1xxx codes are defined by each maker: many sites give Ford's meaning for P1745 or P1790, and on a Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler or Ram they mean something else.
- P1745 isn't a part: it warns that the transmission has run about 3,200 km (2,000 miles) without line pressure control because of another code; repair that code, then clear the VLP counters with the scan tool.
- P1790 always comes with a gear ratio code and, according to Chrysler, indicates a mechanical or hydraulic fault, not an electrical one.
- With P0944 the transmission slips or won't move; before the pump, Chrysler checks the shift lever, fluid level, filter and its seal, and the regulator valve.
- P0882 is almost always the power feed (relay, fuse, splices or battery) and can drag in other pressure codes that go away once it's repaired.
If your Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler or Ram sets P1745, P1790, P0935 or P0944, be careful with what you find online: many code sites give Ford's meaning, which is different. Here's what each code means on Chrysler transmissions (41TE, 40TES, 42RLE, 62TE and RFE) according to Chrysler's US service manual, which models use it, what to check first and which TSS part fits.
What do these codes mean on Chrysler?
| Code | What it means on Chrysler |
|---|---|
| P1745 | Transmission line pressure too high for too long: a notice that the transmission has run thousands of kilometers without line pressure control because of another code. Only on units with a line pressure sensor. |
| P1790 | Fault immediately after shift: it always comes with a gear ratio code and points to a mechanical or hydraulic fault. |
| P0932 and P0933 | Actual line pressure is more than 25 psi above what the computer commands. |
| P0934 and P0935 | Line pressure sensor voltage out of range: 0.35 volts or less (P0934), or 4.75 or more (P0935). |
| P0944 | Loss of hydraulic pump prime: the transmission lost pressure, slips or won't move. |
| P083A and P083B | Low clutch (LC) pressure switch; only on the 6-speed 62TE. |
| P1775 and P1776 | The solenoid switch valve in the valve body is latched in the converter position (P1775) or the low/reverse position (P1776). |
| P0882, P0883 and P0884 | Solenoid pack power feed: low voltage (P0882), voltage before it was commanded (P0883) or a computer that restarted while moving (P0884). |
Why do other sites say something else? Codes that start with P1 are defined by each maker: a P1745 on a Ford isn't the same as on a Dodge. Confirm them with a scan tool that reads Chrysler's transmission computer.
Which codes does each transmission use?
Not every Chrysler transmission sets the same codes: it depends on whether it has a line pressure sensor. This is what Chrysler's code lists show for each unit (models sold in Mexico):
| Models | Which codes it uses |
|---|---|
| Voyager, Grand Voyager, Town & Country 3.3 and 3.8, PT Cruiser and Stratus up to 2005 (41TE) | No line pressure sensor: they don't use P1745 or P0932 to P0935. They do use P0944, P1775, P1776 and P1790, and a power-feed fault shows up as P0888, P0890 or P0891. Limp mode in 2nd. |
| 4-speed Journey 2.4, Avenger 2.4, Cirrus 2.4 and 200 2.4 (40TES) | With a line pressure sensor: P1745, P0932 to P0935, P0944, P1775, P1776, P1790 and P0882 to P0884. Limp mode in 2nd. |
| Liberty, Nitro and Wrangler 3.8 with the variable line pressure (VLP) 42RLE | The same as the 40TES, with P0933 instead of P0932. Limp mode in 2nd. |
| Journey 3.5 and 3.6, Town & Country 4.0 and 3.6, Grand Caravan 3.6, Avenger and 200 V6 (62TE) | All of the above, plus P083A and P083B. Limp mode in 3rd. |
| Ram, Durango, Grand Cherokee and Dakota V8 (45RFE and 545RFE) | Line pressure sensor (P0932 to P0935), P0944, P1775 and P1776; they don't use P1745. With no power to the solenoids, the transmission stays in 3rd. |
P1745: line pressure too high for too long
It's an informational code. Chrysler explains that it sets when the transmission has run without line pressure control for 3,220 km (2,000 miles) or 1,000 2-3 upshifts because of another pressure code, and that the computer then puts it in limp mode to protect it. It only exists on units with a line pressure sensor: the 40TES, the variable line pressure 42RLE and the 62TE. RFE units and the 41TE without a sensor don't use it.
- First repair the pressure code that caused it: P0868, P0869, P0932 or P0933, P0934 or P0935.
- Then Chrysler says to clear the variable line pressure counters with the scan tool function "Clear Variable Line Pressure (VLP) counters": that's how P1745 is erased.
P1790: fault right after a shift
It never appears alone: Chrysler stores it when a gear ratio code (P0731 to P0736) is detected within 1.3 seconds of a shift, and says it indicates a mechanical or hydraulic, not electrical, problem, so only mechanical causes are considered. The diagnosis follows the ratio code it comes with: pressure, clutches, pump and valve body, not sensors or solenoids. More in our P0731 to P0735 guide.
Does your Journey 2.4 stay in one gear? Its 4-speed transmission holds 2nd in limp mode, according to the Mexican owner's manual; 3rd is the limp gear of the 6-speed V6 Journey.
P0932 to P0935: the line pressure sensor
Variable line pressure transmissions measure line pressure with a sensor and adjust it with a pressure control solenoid: a 5% duty cycle gives maximum pressure, and 62%, minimum. There are two kinds of code:
- P0934 and P0935: the sensor voltage left its 0.35 to 4.75 volt range. Chrysler first checks the computer and wiring (5-volt supply, signal and ground) with a simulator, and only if the computer reads it correctly does it replace the sensor.
- P0932 or P0933: actual pressure is more than 25 psi above what the computer commanded. Chrysler compares a gauge with the scan tool and checks the main regulator valve for sticking in its bore; then the sensor and the pressure control solenoid.
Note: on 2009 and 2010 Ram, Durango, Aspen and Dakota trucks with RFE units, Chrysler fixed a false P0935 in the US with a software update.
P0944: the pump lost prime
Chrysler sets it when the transmission slips in a gear, the computer applies every clutch available to test for pressure and none of the pressure switches respond. The transmission slips or won't move, and returns to normal if the pump regains prime. Before the pump, Chrysler checks, in this order:
- The shift lever adjustment, with the position test.
- The fluid level.
- The filter: not cracked, plugged or badly installed, with its seal fully into the pump.
- On RFE units, that the external cooler return filter isn't loose.
- That the main regulator valve isn't sticking.
- And last, the pump.
If there's a lot of debris in the pan, Chrysler says to remove the transmission and inspect every clutch. On the 2011 to 2017 62TE, in the US, a cracked converter piston set P0740, P0868 and P0944 together. And if the truck takes a few seconds to move after sitting for days, it can be normal: the Durango's Mexican manual explains the converter partly drains and refills in about five seconds.
P083A and P083B: 62TE only
They belong to the low clutch (LC) pressure switch, one of the switches in the 62TE's solenoid pack. With P083B, if the switch reads closed in P or N the code sets right away, and if it repeats on three starts in a row the transmission goes into limp mode. Chrysler first checks power-feed codes and P0944, tests the computer and wiring, and if they're fine, replaces the solenoid pack. On the 2018 to 2020 Ram ProMaster in the US, a P083B was fixed with an ABS software update.
P1775 and P1776: the solenoid switch valve in the valve body
This valve in the valve body routes fluid from the low/reverse solenoid either to the 1st gear clutch or to the converter clutch. With P1775 the transmission starts in 2nd instead of 1st and won't lock the converter; with P1776, it stops locking the converter. Chrysler points out the valve is in the valve body and not in the solenoid pack, so the order is:
- If P0841 (low/reverse pressure switch) is also set, diagnose it first.
- If the event data shows code TR2, the shifter was between neutral and overdrive: check the cable adjustment.
- Remove the valve body and clean the valve if there's debris.
- Only if the code returns does Chrysler replace the solenoid pack. More on these transmissions' solenoids in our P0750 guide.
P0882, P0883 and P0884: the transmission's power feed
The computer powers the solenoid pack through a relay, and if it switches it off, the transmission goes into limp mode. P0882 sets when there's less than 3 volts on that feed at start-up, and P0883 when there's voltage before it's commanded. Chrysler warns that low voltage can also set P0846, P0869 or P0871 without the transmission being damaged: repairing the power feed clears them. The order is the transmission relay, the fuse, the output circuits (they usually come from one splice: look for corrosion or water) and last the power distribution module (TIPM) or the computer. On trucks from before 2008, the same fault shows up as P0888, P0890 or P0891.
P0884 is informational: the computer lost power and powered back up while the vehicle was moving. It helps explain a transmission that sits in one gear for a while and then returns to normal, and it points to the computer's power feed or grounds. More on the module's power and communication in our U0101 guide.
How do you clear these codes?
With a scan tool, after the repair. Chrysler clears the transmission codes and the engine's P0700; if the transmission or the computer was repaired or replaced, it runs the Quick Learn with the scan tool, and with P1745 it also clears the VLP counters. Then it warms the fluid above 43 °C (110 °F), checks the level and road-tests with 15 to 20 upshifts.

These are the TSS parts that match what Chrysler checks in each diagnosis. For the power feed (relay, fuses, TIPM) there's no TSS part:
