TSS parts for Ford transmissions: PowerShift DPS6 actuator motor, 6F35 Dorado gasket kit and 6R80 Rojo gasket kit
In short
  • The automatic 2012 to 2018 Focus, 2011 to 2019 Fiesta and 2013 to 2017 Mexican EcoSport have the PowerShift DPS6, a dual-clutch unit with its own fluid.
  • The Fusion, Escape and Edge use the 6F35 6-speed with most of their 4-cylinder engines between 2009 and 2020.
  • The F-150 (sold as the Lobo in Mexico) has the 6R80 6-speed from 2009 to 2016 and the 10R80 10-speed from 2018.
  • To confirm yours, look for the TR code on the driver's door-jamb label; the VIN doesn't identify the transmission.
  • The 8- and 10-speeds take MERCON ULV, almost all 6-speed automatics MERCON LV, and the PowerShift dual-clutch fluid. They're not interchangeable.

If you have an automatic Ford and need transmission parts, you first have to know which transmission it has: Ford uses its own units, but also Getrag, Mazda and Aisin ones, and from 2011 to 2019 its compact cars used the PowerShift, a dual-clutch unit that doesn't work like a conventional automatic. In this article we'll cover which transmission each automatic Ford sold in Mexico has by model and year, how to confirm yours and which fluid it takes. Many US models share the same units, but not all, and we flag the differences we know of.

What transmissions does Ford use?

Ford names its modern automatics with an easy code: the first number is the number of speeds, F means front-wheel drive and R rear-wheel drive, and the next number indicates how strong it is. A 6F35, for example, is a 6-speed front-drive unit, and a 10R80 a 10-speed rear-drive one. Older units have other names, like CD4E, AX4N, 4R70W or E4OD. And several Fords used other makers' units: Getrag in the PowerShift (DPS6), Mazda in the 4F27E and FNR5, and Aisin in the AWF21.

A useful detail: Ford and GM developed their front-drive 6-speeds together, so Ford's 6F35 and 6F50 are cousins of Chevrolet's 6T40 and 6T70. They share a design, but not all of their parts interchange: buy the parts for yours.

The years are model years for the Mexican versions, based on Ford Mexico's spec sheets and brochures, Ford's owner's manuals and technical bulletins, and the transmission identifier on the Transmisiones Veinte 07 home page (in Spanish).

What is the PowerShift and which Fords have it?

The PowerShift, code DPS6, is a dry dual-clutch 6-speed that Getrag (now part of Magna) built in Irapuato, Mexico, among other plants, as the 6DCT250. Inside it's closer to a manual than to an automatic: there's no torque converter, and two clutches, moved by electric actuators and run by a control module (TCM), do the shifting. That's why it feels different, and its problems are different too: shudder and jerky take-offs usually come from the clutches, their actuators or the module. In Mexico it's in the automatic:

  • 2012 to 2018 Focus (2.0 engine), as in the US.
  • 2011 to 2019 Fiesta (1.6 engine), as in the US.
  • 2013 to 2017 EcoSport (2.0 engine). The US only got the 2018-and-later EcoSport, without the PowerShift.
  • 2016 Figo; for later years, check which one yours has (see below for how).

It takes its own dual-clutch transmission fluid: don't put MERCON or ATF in it. The TSS catalog has DPS6 parts: the actuator motor, the input and output speed sensor kit and the range sensor (TRS).

What transmission does the Ford Focus have?

  • 2000 to 2011 Focus (first and second generation): 4F27E 4-speed automatic, the same unit Mazda calls FN4A-EL. Its common problems are in our 4F27E guide.
  • 2012 to 2018 Focus (third generation, 2.0): DPS6 PowerShift 6-speed. Ford Mexico's 2012 spec sheet names it: "transmisión automática DPS6 - 6 vel."
  • In the US, the 2016 to 2018 Focus with the 1.0 EcoBoost used a conventional 6-speed automatic, the 6F15, per Ford's bulletins. The Focus ST was manual only.

What transmission does the Ford Fiesta have?

  • 2011 to 2019 Fiesta (built in Cuautitlán, Mexico, 1.6 engine): DPS6 PowerShift 6-speed in every automatic trim; Ford Mexico's spec sheets and brochures say "transmisión automática PowerShift de 6 velocidades". The Fiesta ST was manual only.
  • Fiesta and Ikon before 2011 (Mexico): Ford Mexico advertised the "Fiesta en automático" from 2006, but we didn't find its unit in Ford Mexico's documents. If yours is an automatic, look it up in the identifier.

What transmission does the Ford EcoSport have?

  • First-generation EcoSport (through 2012, built in Brazil, not sold in the US): it launched with a manual and later got a 2.0 automatic, which Ford Mexico listed as a "4-speed automatic": the 4F27E, according to the identifier.
  • 2013 to 2017 EcoSport (second generation, 2.0, Mexico): DPS6 PowerShift 6-speed; Ford Mexico advertised it as "transmisión automática Powershift de 6 velocidades".
  • 2018-and-later EcoSport (built in India): in Mexico, the 1.5 is manual only and the 2.0 is a 6-speed torque-converter automatic, the 6F35 according to the identifier. The US 1.0 EcoBoost has the 6F15, per Ford's bulletins.

Figo, Ka and Courier

  • Figo (2016 to 2021 in Mexico, built in India): in 2016 its automatic was a PowerShift 6-speed. The identifier also lists the 6F15, a conventional 6-speed automatic, for the Figo, so confirm yours with the door label (see how below).
  • Ka (2001 to 2008) and Courier: the Ford Mexico spec sheets we checked only list them with a manual.

What transmission does the Ford Fusion have?

  • 2006 to 2009 Fusion: with the 2.3, the FNR5 5-speed automatic, of Mazda origin (FS5A-EL); with the 3.0 V6, Aisin's 6-speed automatic, the AWF21, also called TF-81SC.
  • 2010 to 2012 Fusion: with the 2.5 and the 3.0 V6, the 6F35 6-speed automatic, per Ford; with the Fusion Sport's 3.5 V6, the Aisin AWF21.
  • 2013 to 2020 Fusion (second generation, built in Hermosillo, Mexico): 6F35 with the 2.5 and the 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines, per Ford's bulletins. The Fusion Hybrid uses a Ford hybrid transmission, the HF35, with no gears as such. In the US, the 2017 to 2019 Fusion Sport with the 2.7 EcoBoost V6 used the 6F55.

What transmission does the Ford Escape have?

  • 2001 to 2008 Escape (2.0, 2.3 and 3.0 V6): CD4E 4-speed automatic, which Mazda calls LA4A-EL.
  • 2009 to 2012 Escape (2.5 and 3.0 V6): 6F35 6-speed automatic. According to Ford, the 2009 Escape was the first model with this unit; in Mexico, that year's automatic (3.0 V6) is already a 6-speed.
  • 2013 to 2019 Escape: 6F35 with every engine. We cover its problems in our 6F35 guide.
  • 2020-and-later Escape: 8F35 8-speed automatic with the EcoBoost engines; in the US, the front-drive 1.5 uses the 8F24, per Ford's bulletins. The Escape Hybrid uses a Ford hybrid transmission, the HF45 per Ford's bulletins, with no gears as such; the earlier US Escape Hybrid (2005 to 2012) also had a hybrid transmission.

What transmission does the Ford Explorer have?

  • First-generation Explorer (through 1994): A4LD 4-speed automatic.
  • 1995 to 2001 Explorer: with the 4.0 V6, the 4R55E 4-speed and, in later years, the 5R55E 5-speed; with the 5.0 V8, the 4R70W 4-speed.
  • 2002 to 2010 Explorer: with the 4.0 V6, the 5R55W or 5R55S 5-speed; with the 4.6 V8, the 5-speed at first and a 6-speed from the 6R family in the last years: the 6R60, which Ford calls the 6R80 in 2009 and 2010, and which the Explorer Sport Trac V8 also has.
  • 2011 to 2019 Explorer: with the 3.5 V6, the 6F50; with the 3.5 EcoBoost V6, the 6F55; and with the 4-cylinder EcoBoost engines (the 2.0 from 2012 and the 2.3 from 2016 to 2019), the 6F35. All three are 6-speeds.
  • 2020-and-later Explorer: 10R60 10-speed automatic, with the 2.3 EcoBoost and with the ST's 3.0 EcoBoost V6.

What transmission does the Ford Edge have?

  • 2007 to 2014 Edge: with the V6 engines, the 6F50 6-speed automatic; with the 2.0 EcoBoost (2012 to 2014), the 6F35.
  • 2015 to 2018 Edge: with the 2.0 EcoBoost, 6F35; with the 3.5 V6, 6F50; and the Edge Sport with the 2.7 EcoBoost V6, the 6F55.
  • 2019-and-later Edge: 8-speed automatic, the 8F35 with the 2.0 EcoBoost, per Ford's bulletins, and the 8F57 with the Edge ST's 2.7 V6.

What transmission does the Ford Territory have?

The Territory isn't sold in the US. It arrived in Mexico in the fall of 2022, as a 2023 model, with a 1.8 EcoBoost turbo engine and front-wheel drive. Ford Mexico only says "7-speed automatic": trade press describes it as a dual-clutch, but Ford doesn't publish its code. The 2026 Territory hybrid uses a hybrid transmission Ford calls 2DHT.

The earlier Territory, with a 1.5 turbo and a CVT, was never sold in Mexico. And the 2004 to 2018 Territory records you'll see in some catalogs, with ZF or 6R80 units, are the rear-drive Australian Territory, which wasn't sold in Mexico either.

Bronco Sport and Maverick

  • Bronco Sport (2021 and later, 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost, 4x4 in every Mexican trim): 8F35 8-speed automatic, per Ford's bulletins.
  • Gas Maverick (2022 to 2025, 2.0 EcoBoost): also the 8F35. The Maverick Hybrid, which reached Mexico in 2024, uses a Ford hybrid transmission with no gears as such: the HF45 through 2024 per Ford's bulletins and, according to the identifier, the HF55 in newer ones. In the US, the hybrid was offered from 2022.

What transmission does the Ford F-150 have?

In Mexico, the F-150's upscale trims are sold as the Lobo and the work trims as the F-150; the Raptor appears as the Lobo Raptor in recent brochures. They're the same truck, and the transmission depends on the year and the engine:

  • 1997 to 2003: 4R70W 4-speed automatic; Ford Mexico's 2002 spec sheet names it. The Harley-Davidson and some 5.4 V8 versions use the stronger 4R100.
  • 2004 to 2008: 4R70E or 4R75E 4-speed automatic: the 4R70E with the 4.6 V8 through 2006, and the 4R75E with the 5.4 and, from 2007, on all of them.
  • 2009 to 2016: 6R80 6-speed automatic in the Lobo, including the Lobo Raptor SVT (from 2011, with the 6.2 V8), and in the work F-150 from 2011. The 2010 work F-150, with the 4.6 2V V8, still had the 4R75E 4-speed. Its common problems are in our 6R80 guide.
  • 2017: the 6R80 with the 5.0 V8 and the 3.5 V6, as listed in Ford Mexico's price lists, and the new 10R80 10-speed with the 3.5 EcoBoost V6, including the Raptor.
  • 2018 and later: 10R80; Ford Mexico's brochures say "10-speed automatic with SelectShift". 2018 to 2020 work trucks with the 3.3 V6 kept the 6R80: the same brochures list a 6-speed automatic for them. The hybrid (from 2021) uses a hybrid version of the same 10-speed.

What transmission does the Ford Mustang have?

  • Mustang through 2004: 4R70W 4-speed automatic (AODE in 1994 and 1995); Ford Mexico's 2002 spec sheet says "4-speed automatic with overdrive".
  • 2005 to 2010 Mustang: 5R55S 5-speed automatic.
  • 2011 to 2017 Mustang: 6R80 6-speed automatic.
  • 2018-and-later Mustang: 10R80 10-speed automatic.

Expedition, Super Duty, Ranger and other Fords

  • Expedition: a 4-speed automatic through 2006 (4R70W or 4R75 with the 4.6 V8, and the 4R100 with the 5.4 in the early years); a 6-speed from 2007 to 2017 (the 6R75 and, from 2009, the 6R80); and the 10R80 10-speed from 2018.
  • Lincoln Navigator: the 6R80 from 2009 to 2017 (Lincoln Mexico confirms it for 2014 to 2017, with the 5.4 V8 and then the 3.5 EcoBoost V6) and a 10-speed from 2018. The Lincoln Mark LT, sold only in Mexico after 2008, has the 6R80 with the 5.0 V8 in 2013 and 2014.
  • Transit: in Mexico, the 2015 and 2016 gasoline Transit with the 3.7 V6 is an automatic, the 6R80; that era's diesel Transits were manual.
  • F-250, F-350 and other Super Duty trucks: a 4-speed automatic (E4OD, then 4R100) until the early 2000s; the 5R110W TorqShift 5-speed through 2010; the 6-speed TorqShift (6R140) from 2011; and a 10-speed from 2020, according to Ford Mexico's brochures.
  • Ranger: Ford Mexico's 2010 to 2015 spec sheets only list a manual. From 2019 to 2022, the XLT 3.2 diesel has a 6-speed automatic, the 6R80 the Ranger uses in other markets; from 2021 there were also gasoline versions with the 10-speed, and since 2023 most are 10-speeds. The older US Ranger used the A4LD, the 4R44E or 4R55E and later the 5-speed 5R55E or 5R44E, per the identifier.
  • Windstar (through 2003) and Freestar (2004 to 2007): AX4S or AX4N 4-speed automatic; the AX4N is also called 4F50N.
  • 4-speed Taurus and Mercury Sable: also the AX4S or AX4N. The Mexican 2002 Sable's spec sheet says "4-speed electronic".
  • Contour (through 2000) and early-2000s Mondeo: a 4-speed automatic, the CD4E from the first Escape.
  • Five Hundred (2005 to 2007): Aisin's AWF21 6-speed automatic, per Ford's bulletins. Some US versions had a CVT instead; the Mexican ones didn't.

How do you know which transmission your Ford has?

If you're not sure which one yours has, these are the most reliable ways to confirm it:

  • The transmission identifier on the Transmisiones Veinte 07 home page (in Spanish): search for your make, model and year. If it shows several transmissions, that model used more than one depending on the market, the year or the engine; confirm yours with the other ways on this list.
  • The certification label on the driver's door jamb: it has a "TR" field with the transmission code. US Ford owner's manuals have a table that decodes it, and the table depends on the model: on a 2018 Focus, "W" is the DPS6 PowerShift, and on a 2018 Fusion, the 6F35.
  • The tag on the transmission itself: many Ford units carry a tag with the part number and the model code; on the 4F27E, for example, it's on the right side of the case.
  • The window sticker, which Ford itself suggests checking for the transmission type, and in Mexico the trim name and spec sheet: Ford Mexico marks automatics as "TA" or "Automática", and some spec sheets name the unit, like the 2012 Focus's ("DPS6") or the 2002 F-150's ("4R70W").
  • The fluid in the owner's manual: if it calls for dual-clutch transmission fluid, it's a PowerShift, and MERCON ULV means an 8- or 10-speed.

Note that the VIN doesn't identify the transmission; on Fords, the 8th character is the engine. And if your Ford was imported, it may have a different unit than the Mexican version of the same year.

What fluid does your Ford's transmission take?

Not all of them take the same one, and they're not interchangeable. According to Ford's fluid chart and Motorcraft Mexico's product sheets:

8-speeds (8F35, 8F57) and 10-speeds (10R60, 10R80), and the HF45 and HF55 hybridsMERCON ULV
6F35, 6R80, 6R140 TorqShift, 6F50 and 6F55 from 2010, 4R75 from 2009 and the HF35 hybridMERCON LV
5R110W TorqShift, 6R60, 6R75 and ZF 6HP26MERCON LV, which Ford authorizes in place of the original MERCON SP
4F27EMERCON LV from 2007; Ford also authorizes it in earlier units, which called for MERCON V
DPS6 PowerShift (Focus, Fiesta and EcoSport)Ford dual-clutch transmission fluid (Motorcraft XT-11-QDC), not ATF
CD4E, AX4N, 4R70W, 4R75 through 2008, 5R55, FNR5, 6F50 and 6F55 through 2009, Aisin AWF21 and older Ford automaticsMERCON V

Always confirm with your vehicle's manual. Ford notes that some older manuals don't show the fluid it recommends today, and that its chart applies in that case. And don't put MERCON ULV, LV or V where another one is called for, except for the changes Ford authorizes in this table.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most about this topic.

  • What transmission does the Ford Focus have?

It depends on the year. The automatic 2000 to 2011 Focus has the 4F27E 4-speed, and the 2012 to 2018 Focus the DPS6 PowerShift, a dry dual-clutch 6-speed. In the US, the 2016 to 2018 Focus 1.0 EcoBoost used the 6F15. The Focus ST was manual only.

  • Which Fords have the PowerShift transmission?

The automatic 2012 to 2018 Focus and 2011 to 2019 Fiesta, plus, in Mexico, the 2013 to 2017 EcoSport and the first Figos. It's a dry dual-clutch unit (DPS6) that takes its own fluid, not ATF.

  • What transmission does the Ford Fusion have?

The 2006 to 2009 Fusion has the FNR5 5-speed with the 2.3 or the Aisin AWF21 6-speed with the V6. From 2010 almost all use the 6F35 6-speed; the 2010 to 2012 Fusion Sport 3.5 V6 kept the Aisin, the 2017 to 2019 US Fusion Sport 2.7 used the 6F55, and the hybrid uses the HF35.

  • What transmission does the Ford Escape have?

The 2001 to 2008 Escape has the CD4E 4-speed; the 2009 to 2019 Escape, the 6F35 6-speed; and the 2020-and-later Escape, the 8F35 8-speed, or a hybrid transmission in the hybrid version.

  • What transmission does the Ford F-150 have?

It depends on the year and the engine: the 4R70W 4-speed from 1997 to 2003, the 4R70E or 4R75E from 2004 to 2008, the 6R80 6-speed from 2009 to 2016 (and in 2017 with the 5.0 V8 and 3.5 V6), and the 10R80 10-speed from 2017 with the 3.5 EcoBoost and from 2018 on the rest. In Mexico it's sold as the Lobo.

  • How do I know which transmission my Ford has?

Look for the TR code on the driver's door-jamb label and decode it with your owner's manual's table, or check the tag on the transmission itself. The window sticker, the Transmisiones Veinte 07 transmission identifier and the fluid in the manual help too. The VIN doesn't identify the transmission.
